Health & Safety Course Descriptions
Adult/Child/Infant CPR 5 hours ( 1 year certification) Trains lay responders how to overcome any reluctance to act in an emergency situation and how to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults, children, and infants. Participants will learn CPR, conscious choking, unconscious choking, and rescue breathing. This class is designed for worksites, day care providers, and the general public.
First Aid 4 hours (3 year certification) Teaches lay responders the knowledge and skills necessary to give care in an emergency, help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until medical help arrives. Participants will learn how to splint, bandage a wound, identify the signs and symptoms of stoke, diabetic emergencies, poisoning, allergic reactions, and heat and cold related emergencies.
CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer 7 1/2 hours (2 year certification) This class is designed for those who have a duty to act an the skills needed to respond appropriately. This class is recommended for nursing students, nurses, dentists, police, and any other health care professional. Participants will learn one and two person CPR for adults, children, and infants. They will also learn rescue breathing, conscious choking, unconscious choking, bag-valve mask, and AED skills.
Adult, Child, Infant CPR Review 4 hours This course is designed for individuals who hold current CPR certification and would like to re-certify without taking the full course. Please bring your certification card and textbook; if needed new books are available for purchase.
CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Review 5 hours For people already certified in CPR for the Professional. One and two-person CPR for adults, children, and infants, face mask and bag valve mask skills, and AED awareness. Please bring your certification card and textbook; if needed new books are available for purchase.
Challenges
The Winona County Chapter offers challenges for all of our Health and Safety courses. Challenges provide an opportunity for those with current or expired certifications to recertify or extend their certification without taking a complete course. Challenge participants must have taken a minimum of two complete courses for certification before attempting a challenge. Participants must be able to pass the written exam with a score of 80% or higher and be able to successfully demonstrate the appropriate skills to the instructor. Challenges provide no instruction; students must be prepared before they arrive. Challenges take between 1 to 2 1/2 hours, depending on the material being tested.
